A Song of Ice and Fire/Game of Thrones is a lifestyle for History of Westeros. Obsessive research, reading between the lines, bad jokes and most importantly, a love of the series worthy of Florian & Jonquil. Or Rhaegar & Lyanna. Or Lord Wyman Manderly and ...pies.

In other words, grow d fuq up.
The changing colours of the Others is a species of camouflage which is an element of the armour they wear. That touch is lovely. It makes them appear both superior and fallible at the same time. It shows them to have alarmingly advanced abilities, be they technological or magical - I believe in these novels technology and magic are much the same thing, at bottom. But, it also makes it evident that they don't just have vulnerabilities, they're aware of them, and concerned about them. They are not only wearing armour, to protect themselves, but they feel the need to also conceal themselves. Which is....curious. Because in this set to with Waymar Royce, Royce is so easily trounced. The Others sneer at him Mock him. Though, to me, sneering and mocking, that is something bullies do. And bullies, they're notoriously weak and fearful. They only take on people when they have an absurd "unfair" advantage. When outmatched, they run off, complaining of being victimized. (think of Trump... he loves to talk about how tough he is, he likes to mock people like..John McCain and say McCain was a coward. But if someone so much as asks him a question, he cries and moans about how mean everyone is to him.) The behaviours of the two sides in this Prologue encounter... Waymar Royce, who had shown himself to be a bit self satisfied, behaves really well, whereas the Others, they don't. All their technology is far more advanced than anything Royce has, and there are at least 5 of them. Five on one. Not that impressive. Still, that could also be read as simply being the tactics of people who prefer being sure of winning over taking risks. In WW2 Montgomery was said to be like that. He didn't take risks in his battles. Patton criticized him constantly, claiming Montgomery wasn't rough and tough enough, didn't do "brave" risky things. Montgomery replied that Yes, he was funny that way, he didn't consider increasing the risk to the lives of his men either intelligent or honourable. Patton, self adoring as ever, took this to be Montgomery conceding that he was a coward. Whatever the case. There was a lot to chew over in this opening chapter. I loved it. I hooked me hard. And it was outrageous, funny, and the sign of an author who trusts his skills, that we don't see the Others for so SO long. We even only hear about them in the occasional dropped snide remark from Tyrion, or if Old Nan speaks. KNowing that they do indeed exist, it makes for a wonderful insight into Tyrion. Other people, including Tyrion, are continually telling us how clever he is. But Martin flags up to us, that Tyrion is not nearly as smart as he believes himself to be. Even when he sees the Wall, he thinks people built it for no very special reason.
Really enjoyed this video. Far too many Ice& Fire related videos are filled with endless whacko "theories" in which every character turns out to be somebody else, as well as being revealed to have super natural powers - despite G Martin having said many times that he believes in keeping the supernatural to a minimum. This video manage to avoid those too common traps. He speculated about things, but his speculations were always grounded in the reality of the world that Martin has created. What's more, I ended up with a much better grasp of the landscape of the areas in the novels. Very enjoyable indeed.
Really helpful
Randpm, but I think that Heleana's bug obsession is setting up that somehow, Larys is going to be the cause of her death. He will hear more of her weird comments, see her drawings, and either try to use her, which drives her insane, OR, he becomes afraid of what information she knows and ultimately will reveal.
It's Harrenhal Day! 🔥🏰👻
No telling what they'll show us next on HotD
would be great if the hosts stop cutting each other so often...we'd like to hear longer thoughts and reasonings
Idk if the show will show us Rooks Rest because of GOT
yes they will
I think the most important question about this season is....will we see Ser Elmo Tully?
I think we’ll see him
Nice old school live stream
Don’t expect battle of the gullet this season. I’m pretty sure they heavily suggested that will be next season. And that was reported about the same time they decided to reduce the number of episodes. Essentially the report was the battle was too big and they needed more time so they moved it to next season.
I believe they want to open next season with it
Idk, they were pretty enthusiastic about the “action” this season, who knows lol
Yeah, i don´t know why people think the gullet will be in this season.... The season probably ends with the battle of the Red Fork which is the second Battle of the season
A red eye, on my red dragon!!!! 😂😂 made me giggle!!! 😂 and i needed that 🤣🤣
I picture a lot of sheep running around the vale.
Maybe gaemon palehair will be the bastard of Aemond
I like the idea of Gaemon being one of Aegon’s bastards from the fighting pits.
@@BenjicotRivers yeah I thought he was Aegon’s as well after reading the book. But in this stream when they talked about sylvi possibly being a combination of Essie and sylvenna sand from the book it made me think he could be aemonds since he is sleeping with her.
First comment, babyyyy
Warg King was probably a blackwood
The Jeb Reference is key...#valarreeadous
I believe it was Ned that referred to Robert as “musculed like a maiden’s fantasy” - which is hilarious
1:19:40 - Daemon waited for days to hear what Rhaenyra wanted him to do. If he was only pretending to be loyal, he would have just gone and done what he wanted from the beginning.
I stream the ck2 mods of game of thrones its heaps fun love the show too
I think the youngest ever kingsguard was 10; he was only a sworn sword for a single day, but he died protecting his king, who lived because of it. Someone lectures someone else about it in the books. I can’t remember, maybe Jaime lectures Joffrey. So he’s not generally regarded as “the youngest kingsguard ever” because he was “made a kingsguard” (which usually following their public, ceremonial appointment to office, has a follow up ceremony in the sept where they swear their vows before the gods; it’s usually a whole thing, which is why their vows are so closely tied to the seven and the faith, because during this time Visenya and Aegon were trying to make concessions to the Faith Militant for giving up their arms, so they were using seven all over the place and trying to put on an active show of accepting the religious cultures of the people over which they wished to rule) in the midst of chaos, on a battlefield during a messy and perilous retreat, and while this ten year old kingsguard didn’t live to see the next day, he still accepted the duty on the spot, and succeeded in protected the king’s life with his own, so he was buried with full honors befitting of the white cloak, but when people discuss the youngest ever kingsguard, it’s a whole deal that Jamie was the youngest ever appointed at the time he was “honored” with this lifelong office by Ares-at fifteen or sixteen. That is, until Loras Tyrell came along and joined the kingsguard at one year younger than Jamie, just in case the reader missed all the other parallels. 😂 the point is, when they’re discussing who was youngest, they don’t include the true one day kingsguard since it was such unusual circumstances and he literally never even wore the white cloak until he was being buried in it. They’re discussing those who are like full-fledged tourney champs who earned the position via competition performance or some act of gallantry-with riding and fighting skills befitting entrusting the life of the king to in normal, everyday circumstances, as well as, like you said, keep the king’s secrets, guard his family, be wary of subterfuge and less obvious threats, etc. So anyone less than 20 is crazy young to appoint to a position that serious and that sacrosanct.
Love you all! Keep up the great work!
Again, 8 and 10 means 18!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
yeah haha, they eventually corrected me later in the vid as you probably saw. Real brain fart there!
@@HistoryofWesteros My heartfelt sympathy haha. Yes, I heard; oops.
Great video again. Looking forward to seeing these all season.
Imagine sir Cole being a commander of the kingsguard when Clegane got his white cloak. He refused to swear an oath and wore his white cloak with his personal dark gray armor, like he would have an epic meltdown with Sandor😂
So many Tullys with Sesame Street names... Elmo, Kermit, Oscar, and much later, Grover... I feel like this is GRRM having a little giggle.
I love these short form breakdowns!

So how many of you sickos thought the head was gonna fall off when the cart got stuck 😂
The silent sisters are no fools, they hook the needle right under the collarbone, give it a nice firm mooring.
Does show Rhaenyra have agency? Just asking...
Thursday and this still isn't in my podcast feed (I use Overcast, not sure if that contributes to it). I'm fine listening to this at work over YT (especially if YT is more lucrative for HoW than the podcast feeds). But that seems like a longer delay than usual.
we did a tech upgrade this week and it slowed us down in the short term - but it should enable us to move quicker with uploads the rest of the season!
@@HistoryofWesteros Hot diggity damn! (But seriously... if you guys get better monetization here, I can adjust my listening habits accordingly)
Dang! Did Ashaya produce this?! It’s really wonderful and shows some skills!
she did!
GoT & HoTD ages are stated as 6 & 40 = 46, or 3 & 20= 23. They didn’t join at ages 8 and 10. They joined at age 18. Also wasn’t Jamie the youngest named Kingsguard?
I'm on Team Shepherd / Pro Peasant Riots.
Erryk Cargyll & Arryk Cargyll it's too bad none of the monarchs are worthy of their service and sacrifice
I keep forgetting Cole really good at coming up with plans that require violence.
Daemon Targaryen to his black kids, stepkids, and toddlers. He will pay equally no attention to you With all Coles's faults at least he gives a shit about the Royal Family that he's chosen. The kingmaker is the only positive male role model to the princes and princess. He's not a good one but he tries.
If Viserys was a decent father, grandfather, or husband to his second wife. then maybe his son would not destroy his shit. I do love how Paddy Considine can participate even though he's no longer in the show anymore.
These breakdowns are great. Clear, concise but no important detail overlooked. And the graphics are really fun! hope you have as much fun making these as we do watching them!
Does the Kingsguard not fluctuate in number while there may be a set number (say 7 or so) I would think similar to secret service the more family members the more Kingsguard. I would think it’s more than just family in Kings Landing. I assume Rhanerya had a guard in Dragonstone as well as one for Jace at least. All of Alicent’s children. Ostensibly anyone who could threaten the King by harming what is precious to him would get a guard. May be different as the children grow focusing on just those in Red Keep and direct line but I don’t think an existing Kingsguard has to always die to add a new one. Perhaps Viserys saw his family growing and discussed adding more Kingsguard with Ser Harold, impressive twins demonstrate, seems very Vizzy T to add them both, a good example to his sons and grandsons
I think the D goes great in the front and the back 😅
Direwolves and Krakens , fierce beasts, but a golden rose growing strong, that strikes fear in the heart
Thank you
This podcast has been a must watch companion to not just the tv shows but also the books for over a decade now. Keep up the great works guys
How would the other Kingsguard feel about having to fight Barristan?...... The same as any living person .... Fear
Does this podcast have spoilers from the book?
Yes
All of this video is comparing the series from the book and talking about fire & blood and asoiaf so yes
On Mondays you can find a book spoiler free review
This episode, like all episodes with Sean as a co-host, is free of book spoilers, as Sean is "unsullied" (has not read the book).
@@burntorangehorn that's only partly true- i've read the book(fire and blood) up to where season one ended. so i/we wont spoil anything that might yet happen in the show, but may spoil events in the book that take part before the show
